Southern Utah Yogis
Over the last 60 years, a few seeds of Eastern Philosophy have grown to find almost mainstream acceptance in the West. Yoga is, arguably, one of the strongest seeds to survive the over eight thousand mile journey from India to the U.S. Seemingly, Yoga studios are sprouting up everywhere. Yoga classes can now be found in many communities in the West and throughout the world, in both small towns and large cities, in fitness centers, community centers, colleges and universities and even in nursing homes.
There appears to be a consensus that Yoga is almost universally beneficial to one's body, mind and soul. Even science writer, William J. Broad's, recent and much discussed book, The Science of Yoga; the Risks and Rewards, lists a plethura of yoga's proven benefits. Broad's list of risks include cautions about the potential to put pressure on one's neck while doing certain yoga asanas such as the plow, shoulder stand and headstand, the risk of taking yoga from a poorly trained instructor (which might lead to incorrectly doing the aformentioned poses) and the risk of believing that all forms of yoga are aerobic excercise.
Still, Broad states that in spite of the lack of measurable aerobic conditioning performed in some forms of yoga, the majority of yoga practitioners are fit and healthy. Perhaps this is due to factors other than simple aerobics. Adequate sleep, for example has been proven to affect overall health and body weight. Recently, we've all heard about the effects of stress on weight gain and immunity. For those of us who practice yoga we simply know that we see results in multiple areas of our lives, including fitness.
For the benefits, Broad cites yoga's ability to reduce heart disease and high blood pressure, increase flexibility, improve self/body image, boost one's mood and to reduce inflammation in the body. Considering that inflammation is the root of many diseases, this is a deeply meaningful reward for those who practice yoga.
During this weeks episode of Quantum Journey, Rebecca Iverson and I (Rebecca Farraway) discussed the many styles of yoga, which are now practiced in the U.S. and abroad. Rebecca Iverson is a certified Kundalini Yoga Instructor and I am certified as an instructor of Sivananda Yoga. We also interviewed two local St. George Yogi's J.T. Brown, owner of BeHot Yoga Studios www.stgeorgeyoga.com and Lance Bozek from Downtown Yoga www.downtownyogasg.com .
Rebecca Iverson recieved her training in Kundalini Yoga from the Kundalini Research Institute and was taught by Hari Jiwan and Tej www.kundaliniresearchinstitute.org. I recieved my training in Sivananda Yoga from Yoga Vidya in Kerala, India www.hathayoga-meditation.com . My 15 year old daughter Hollie is also a Sivananda Yoga Instructor. She accompanied me to India, where we spent an intensive two months. During that time, Hollie and I kept a video blog at www.hollieandrebeccainindia.blogspot.com . JT Brown, Lance Bozek, Rebecca Iverson, Hollie and I (Rebecca Farraway) all continue our training through advanced teacher trainings and workshops. Below, you can listen to a podcast of Quantum Journey's discussion on the many styles of yoga.
